Description
This is the beginning of the second stage of the Panotrait project, and dates back to late 2018, into early 2019. The image is made up of four versions of the same figure, but two are inverted from each other. The original reference for the flying figure was taken, with the kind permission of award winning sculptor George Triggs, and his wonderful piece “Collision 2” In an earlier collaboration with George, using “Collision 1” I had discovered that an effective way to convey movement of his single figure in two dimensions was to place versions of itself in context with one and another. So this piece was a step on in that direction, employing what i had learnt from the Panotrait series to date. This time i used the same image starting point and just made mirror reflections of them, creating four versions, two facing left, two facing right. I then dissected them, but instead of the simple linear dissection used on the Panotrait series to that point, I used a combination of geometric shapes, and the outline of the figures to dissect the images up. So each version has a version of the inverted/mirror version of itself within the construction. I then used the linear strip construction on the background of the image. The mirroring of the image within the image is what gives rise to the title of the piece. I’ve provided additional photos so you can see this process more clearly.
