Description
This is one of the larger images i generated for the Panotrait series. I made this painting back in 2019, and it produced another 16 variations on the composition too. The images are large in and of themselves, so turning them into a larger panotrait version has to this point evade me
For me the image carries an awful lot of metaphor –
Tentatively I’ve called this one “Moonlight Requisitions”. It’s proving to be a highly layered painting. For me it’s a painting about art. A friend of mine spotted a hidden shadowy figure/summoner dead centre of the image. Although its placing could be seen to be crude, for me it’s highly pertinent. this figure is the projector of the whole image/figure you seen unveiled from the drapery. So the figure in the painting is something akin to the scale of the Colossus at Rhodes, with added connotations of classical beauty in a somewhat androgynous nude female form. The human scale of the image is the Summoner character. The shadow casting an aspirational cultural icon that is inhuman in its scale. There’s a few additional metaphors – one foot in the past, balancing the forward supporting leg. The obvious crucifixion pose has many connotations. The way i have applied the paint has a stony marble like quality, especially when seen in the flesh, alluding to classicism again.
Most of these were intentional, the Summoner character was not. I really hadn’t noticed this aspect of this image until it was pointed out to me., although I suspect my subconscious was well aware of it. As it is implicit in the composition itself, and is retained throughout the ensuing versions I made from this composition.
